Early Profile
Nnamdi Kanu, also known as Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, was born into a royal family on September 25, 1967, in Isiama Afara, Abia State.
His father HRH Eze Israel Kanu was raised with his parents before he made the decision to leave the country. He is the king of Isiama Afara in the Abia State.
The firstborn and only boy of his parents, Nnamdi Kanu is a well-behaved young man. His parents, HRH Eze Israel Kanu and Mrs. Ugoeze Sally Nnenne Okwu-Kanu, are both late bloomers.
Education
Nnamdi Kanu attended Library Avenue Primary School, which is now a part of the Abia State government house in Umuahia, for his elementary education. He subsequently continued his secondary schooling at Government College.
Nnamdi Kanu pursued college study at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) after receiving his first high school diploma, but due to ongoing strikes at the university, he was forced to pursue his education abroad.
History
Nnamdi Kanu educated himself on the history of Nigeria, the Igbo, and Biafra. He was able to observe the differences in Nigerians’ lifestyles and the many cultures, traditions, and even religious convictions. He also realized that nothing should unite all of the ethnic groups in Nigeria.
His campaigning for Biafra actually began when he became aware of the level of hatred emanating from the North toward the South, which was a significant contributing element to the Nigerian Civil War years earlier.
The Eastern part of Nigeria is being ignored, utterly removed from consideration, and labeled as the 5% even after the war and in this day and age (5 percenters).
All of these served as an eye-opener and sparked the campaign for Biafra’s restoration, which is regarded as the Igbos’ homeland.
According to his late father, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu decided to take the helm and lead the Biafrans because it came to light that Ralph Uwazuruike, the former head of the Movement for Actualization of Biafra, frequently collected funds from the Nigerian Federal Government, undermining the movement.
As soon as this was realized, Kanu confronted Ralph Uwazuruike, who then attempted to silence him. As a result, IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) was born, which the government also tried to suppress by designating the group as a terrorist organization. However, the more they struggled, the more well-known the group became.
His Arrest
Due to his tenacity and determination to see Biafra realized, Nnamdi Kanu never once grew weary of educating his followers and denouncing the Nigerian government. As a result, the Federal Government of Nigeria pursued him.
The Department of State Service (DSS) detained Nnamdi Kanu in 2015 at the Golden Tulip Essential Hotel in Ikeja, where he was staying. He was then transferred to Abuja and turned over to the SSS.
Massive demonstrations took out in the South-Eastern and some South-Southern regions as soon as the public learned of his imprisonment.
Since most people who didn’t support the fight joined the demonstration, which increased his popularity, the court’s answer to his case moved quickly.
He was eventually given bond once all of the bail requirements had been satisfied, but he wasn’t released, and this was reportedly done to quell the unrest and avoid upsetting the Igbo people and Nnamdi Kanu followers.
Nnamdi Kanu was charged with intimidation, criminal conspiracy, and affiliation with an unlawful group on November 23rd, 2015, at an Abuja Magistrate Court.
He was released in 2017 with a number of restrictions, all of which he disobeyed since Nigeria’s highest officials didn’t take the law seriously, so there is no reason for him to follow the same laws now.
Because the Nigerian government was aware of their actions, it became impossible to arrest him. When they eventually did, it resulted in a failed arrest; Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was able to flee, his dog was killed, and the Nigerian military agents damaged his residence.
The Nigerian Army launched Operation Python Dance, which the government utilized to encircle the Eastern states. Before it was revealed that the leader of IPOB is in Israel, his whereabouts were unclear for months. There was even speculation that he might be in Malasia, but he currently calls the United Kingdom home.
Nnamdi Kanu Wife / Family
While still in custody, on January 5, 2016, Nnamdi Kanu married his love, Mrs. Uchechi Okwu Kanu. Uchechi has always been a supporter of her husband’s activism and ideals.
The pair has a son and has a happy marriage. Other than his deceased parents, we don’t have complete information about the other family members.
Nnamdi Kanu was unable to attend his parents’ funeral due to the government of Nigeria’s pursuit.
