Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, was born on July 11th, 1995 in Lagos to a Nigerian mother and a British father. When she was five years old, her mother lost her father, leaving her sole parent to raise her. She completed her elementary schooling in Lagos before enrolling in Dowen College in Lekki. Later, she relocated to Johannesburg to enroll in a South African university’s Economics program. Tems was raised in a modest household and after joining a community chorus, she became aware of her musical talent. She began her journey to being a talented musician when she was young. She practiced on her brother’s guitar and recorded songs with the school chorus. She recalled how her music teacher encouraged her to sing with her genuine voice when she doubted her talent, according to a documentary with MU Narratives.
